主要介绍两种较常用的分类法：中国图书馆分类法和国际十进制分类法.
中国图书馆分类法
《中国图书馆分类法》（原名《中国图书馆图书分类法》，简称《中图法》) ，是我国建国后编制出版的一部具有代表性的大型综合性分类法。自 1999 年第四版起更名为《中国图书馆分类法》，英文译名为 Chinese Library Classification, 英文缩写为 CLC 。《中图法》与国内其他分类法相比，编制产生年代较晚，但发展很快，它不仅系统地总结了我国分类法的编制经验，而且还吸取了国外分类法的编制理论和技术。目前，《中图法》已普遍应用于全国各类型的图书馆，国内主要大型书目、检索刊物、机读数据库以及《中国国家标准书号》等都著录《中图法》分类号。
图书分类法是按照一定的思想观点，以科学分类为基础，结合图书资料的内容和特点分门别类组成的分类表。《中图法》将所有知识分为五大部类、 22 个大类。马克思主义、列宁主义、毛泽东思想、邓小平理论是指导我们思想的基础，作为一个基本部类，列于首位（用字母 A 表示）；哲学是关于自然科学和社会科学的概括和总结，因此把它列为第二位（用字母 B 表示）；社会科学（又细分为九个类，分别用字母 C—K 表示）是人类社会活动的总结知识，与马克思列宁主义的关系比自然科学密切，所以在中图法中，首先反映社会科学，然后是自然科学（细分为十个类目，分别用 N—V 和 X 表示）；对于一些内容庞杂、类无专属，无法按某一学科内容性质分类的图书，概括为综合性图书（用字母 Z 表示），作为一个基本部类，置于最后。

《国际十进分类法》 (Universal Decimal Classification) 简称 UDC 。 1927 年～ 1929 年第一次以法文出版。以后陆续翻译成英、德、日、西班牙、意、俄等文字出版。 UDC 是以美国《杜威十进分类法》 (DDC) 为基础编制而成的。被广泛应用于科学论文的分类。现列简表如下（注其中有下划线的类目链接的是其更详细的子类目）：
